These are three miniature weedpots turned from Lilac wood. A friend of a friend was showing me a very old Lilac bush with considerable dead wood in it. She talked about having the entire bush removed. I offered to trim it if I could keep the wood. That was simple enough. Life in general has very little use for dead wood in Lilac bushes, so she was glad to have the bush trimmed and the "waste" removed. In return, I gave her a few of these weedpots. Notice the quarter for size comparison.
From left to center, the small weedpots are made of oak, mock orange, and grapevine. The oak weedpot came from a neighbor trimming the lower branches from a young oak tree. The mock orange wood is extremely hard and has lots of cracks. This is probably the hardest wood I've turned and is really only good for things like this. The grapevine was a challenge. It's kind of stringy wood - that's the best description I have for it - but soft and easy to shape.
Miniature turnings from unique materials
Sometimes, I find small pieces of wood from shrub or tree trimming, fallen branches, even grapevines. This gallery shows examples of some of these items.
